Chinese scholarships, explained

Six funding routes to study in China — from CSC to university and Confucius awards.

CSC Scholarship — embassy route

Bilateral China Scholarship Council programme via your embassy or ministry. Often fully funded: tuition, housing, insurance and a monthly stipend.

CSC Scholarship — university route

Apply directly to a Chinese university that nominates you to the CSC. Ideal if you have a target school and can submit early.

Silk Road / Belt & Road

Sub-programmes for Belt and Road partner countries. Often via participating universities, covering degree study and sometimes a Chinese language year.

Local government scholarships

Funding from provinces and municipalities (Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang…). Partial or full coverage depending on the city.

University scholarships

Awards funded by the host university: academic excellence, early application or field of study. Often more accessible than CSC for some profiles.

Confucius / Chinese language year

Scholarships focused on Chinese language (HSK) and culture — a common bridge before a bachelor’s or master’s in China.
